My journey through Iceland was a captivating odyssey through a land of unparalleled beauty and diverse landscapes. Visiting in July, I quickly learned that summer in Iceland is unlike any other, with cold temperatures and relentless winds specially in the highlands, make sure to pack warm layers.
Beginning my Icelandic adventure with my friend Lorenzo, a seasoned dive instructor, we embarked on an extraordinary snorkeling experience in the Silfra Fissure within Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was followed by a tour of the Golden Circle, which included a magnificent waterfall, a geothermal area with hot springs, and a historic national park boasting gorges and ridges.
Exploring the spectacular Seljalandsfoss waterfall and discovering the hidden gem of Saudafoss amidst grazing sheep and stunning views, the day unfolded with captivating sights of glaciers and black sand beaches, culminating the Hálsanefshellir caves and basalt formations.
Embarking on the ambitious Fimmvörðuháls Pass hike, we encountered a wealth of natural wonders : 26 waterfalls, 1 volcano, 2 glaciers and 3 unique landscapes. Be ready for a long hike, 25km and 1400m of total elevation gain. As we were trying to get back to our car, a lack of planning led to an unexpected adventure in Thórsmörk, where the kindness of an Icelandic family offered a ride back, enriching our journey with tales of Iceland’s rich history.
After dropping off my mate to Reykjavik I set forth to the iconic Highlands, the weather conditions were terrible a dip in the hot springs at Hveravellir lodge amidst snowcapped landscapes provided a moment of tranquility before venturing onwards to the captivating Westfjords. Navigating through the Westfjords : a rugged peninsula of mountains cut by massive fjords, en route to Isafjordur a scenic drive will unveil the majesty of the fjords, getting there by lunch time was the perfect timing for a seafood feast. Quick stop at Naustahvilft or the Troll Seat a short and steep hike overlooking the town and fjord.
The Following day I ventured on a boat ride to Hornstrandir nature reserve. Though a single day felt fleeting, hiking between bays was a magical experience. A pit stop at Læknishúsið before the ferry ride back to Isafjordur, lucky enough while enjoying a hot chocolate I over heard locals talking about the old days on the island, then they started to play folkloric music. After getting back to Isafjordur I decided to go check out Haestahjallafoss, on the way I did a spontaneous hike in Þingeyri which revealed the stunning colors of the mountains under the midnight sun, it occurs in summer when the sun remains visible at the local midnight, there I got my most unique shot of all time.
Quick stop to check out Gardar BA 64 an old shipwreck washed ashore, preceded a journey to Raudisandur beach. A chance encounter with Laurent who was hitchhiking led to an exploration of the magnificent Latrabjarg cliffs, it is Europe’s largest bird cliff, 14km long and up to 440m high. The cliffs are home to millions of birds, including puffins, northern gannets, guillemots and razorbills.
After immersing myself in the wonders of the Westfjords for four days, I set my sights on the Snaefellsness peninsula. From the Eldborg crater to the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, each stop offered a glimpse into the region’s unique beauty. A visit to the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum introduced me to the Icelandic delicacy Hákarl which is fermented Greenland shark with a strong ammonia smell and taste, best enjoyed with a shot of brennivín.
Eager to explore Iceland’s highlands, I seized a one-day window to hike the mythical Kerlingarfjöll, a landscape ablaze with vibrant hues and majestic mountains, these adventures in Iceland left an indelible mark on my journey, creating lasting memories of its raw beauty and diversity.
Unwilling to depart from Iceland without a proper journey through the highlands, I seized a one-day window and drove once again on the mythic route F35 to the vibrant landscape of the majestic Kerlingarfjöll and the imposing Kerlingar mountains covered in snow. These adventures in Iceland left in endelible mark, creating lasting memories which will forever hold a special place in my heart.
